The Bradford Area Public Library is looking for a full-time Youth Services Assistant. The Youth Services Assistant is responsible for assisting the Youth Services Librarian with planning and implementing early literacy and school-aged programs and planning the Summer Reading Program. Under the direction of the Youth Services Librarian, the Youth Services Assistant will provide outreach to local daycares and preschools, organize and shelve the collection, create and maintain displays, and assist with other library activities as needed. 



  • Experience and/or coursework in early learning, preschool or elementary education or children’s services required.  College degree preferred.
  • FBI Clearance, Act 34 Child Abuse Clearance, Criminal Background Check
  • An awareness of existing community resources is a plus, as well as the ability to anticipate community needs and interests.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and competence in Office applications, Internet research, and social networking applications.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and exhibit a dedication to the mission and programmatic goals of the library.
  • The ability to effectively communicate, engage and work with all age groups, specifically children and their caregivers.
  • The ability to work in a team environment and to handle a fast-paced public service setting.
  • The schedule for this position is variable and requires day, night, and weekend hours dependent upon the events scheduled each week.

Primary Duties: 

  • Provide reference service and reader’s advisory service to children and families
  • Assist patrons with use of library materials and equipment
  • Develop new and innovative ideas for early literacy and school-age programs
  • Collaborate with the Youth Services Librarian to develop and implement early literacy and school-age programs, including story time, craft programs, and other activities that support early literacy
  • Provide support for the Youth Services Librarian to develop and implement Summer Reading
  • Report accurate program statistics to the Youth Services Librarian
  • Under the supervision of the Youth Services Librarian, cultivate and maintain contact with teachers and librarians at public schools, private schools, and preschools
  • At the direction of the Youth Services Librarian, provide outreach services and story times to local daycares and preschools
  • Ensure that program materials and supplies are kept organized and properly inventoried.
  • Maintain furnishings, developmental toys and equipment in the Early Literacy Center.
  • Attend community outreach events such as Kids Fest or Pumpkin Fest as a library representative 
  • Recommend purchase of books or materials to Youth Services Librarian
  • Ensure the Early Literacy Center is tidy at all times
  • Provide excellent customer service to all library patrons.

Secondary Duties: 

  • Maintain clean and welcoming appearance of programming areas in the library.
  • Maintain a clean and organized office and storage space 
  • Assist the circulation staff with basic responsibilities as needed.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings
  • Assist in library group tours

$12/hr, 40 hours a week
